Frequently Asked Questions... About Lutherans
Q. Do Lutherans believe in Jesus Christ?
Jesus said to his disciples "Follow me" (Matt. 4:19; 9:9). We are followers of Jesus Christ who take Him at His word.
Q. Do Lutherans believe Jesus died on the cross and rose again?
Jesus said He was going to die and rise again (i.e. Mark 10:33-34). After His death, Jesus appeared to his disciples (i.e. Luke 24:36) and He said "See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself" (Luke 24:39). Many people witnessed him alive and wrote testimonies of this (i.e. the Gospels).
Q. Do Lutherans believe the Bible is God's Word?
Jesus said that the Scriptures bear witness about Him (John 5:39). Jesus affirmed the truth of the Scriptures so we do too.
Q. Do Lutherans follow (or worship) Martin Luther King Jr.?
No. Although he was a great man, our church name and our church history are not connected to Martin Luther King Jr. We are followers of Jesus Christ and we worship him. Our name "Lutheran" is a historical name due to the work of Martin Luther (1500's).
Q. Do Lutherans believe that baptism is a condition of salvation?
Jesus said, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." (Matt. 28:19-20) As followers of Jesus, we baptize and teach because He commands us.
Q. Do Lutherans believe Jesus is the only way to heaven?
Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) We follow Jesus because He is the way.
